What is Sensory Integration Therapy?

Sensory integration (SI) therapy addresses difficulties in how the brain receives and processes information from the senses โ€” touch, movement, sound, sight, smell, and the internal senses of body position (proprioception) and balance (vestibular).

Some children are overwhelmed by everyday sensory experiences โ€” loud sounds, certain textures, bright lights, or unexpected movement. Others under-respond and constantly seek intense sensory input. Both patterns reflect a sensory processing difficulty, and this imbalance makes it hard to focus, participate in daily activities, and feel comfortable in the world.

Our sensory integration therapy uses the specialised Ayres Sensory Integrationยฎ framework, delivered through purposeful play in a sensory-rich environment. Sessions are designed to provide the 'just right' sensory challenge โ€” building the brain's ability to receive and use sensory information more effectively over time.

Who Benefits Most?

  • Extreme sensitivity to touch, textures, or clothing tags
  • Covers ears frequently; distressed by ordinary sounds
  • Oversensitive to smells or certain food textures
  • Constantly seeking movement, crashing, or heavy input
  • Poor body awareness โ€” clumsy or unaware of own strength
  • Difficulty with transitions or unexpected changes
  • Emotionally dysregulated when sensory demands are high
  • Avoids playground equipment, messy play, or new textures

What We Treat & Address

๐Ÿ‘†

Tactile Processing

Oversensitivity or undersensitivity to touch โ€” affecting tolerance of clothing, physical contact, textures, and messy play.

โš–๏ธ

Vestibular Processing

Difficulties with balance, movement, and the gravitational sense โ€” affecting coordination, posture, and comfort with physical activity.

๐Ÿ’ช

Proprioception

Poor awareness of body position and force โ€” leading to clumsiness, difficulty grading movements, or constantly seeking heavy input.

๐Ÿ‘‚

Auditory Processing

Oversensitivity to sounds that others find unremarkable โ€” leading to distress, avoidance, or difficulty concentrating in noisy environments.

๐Ÿ”‡

Sensory Modulation

Difficulty regulating the brain's overall response to sensory input โ€” swinging between overwhelm and sensory-seeking across different situations.

๐ŸŽฏ

Praxis (Motor Planning)

Difficulty planning and executing new or unfamiliar physical movements โ€” affecting play, sport, handwriting, and daily activities.

4

Home Sensory Diet

A personalised programme of sensory activities your child can do at home and school to maintain optimal sensory regulation throughout the day.

5

Environment Modifications

Practical recommendations for adapting home and classroom environments to reduce sensory overwhelm and support self-regulation.

What Your Child Will Gain

๐Ÿง˜

Better Self-Regulation

Children learn to manage their sensory needs more effectively โ€” reducing meltdowns, overwhelm, and sensory-driven behavioral challenges.

๐ŸŽ“

Improved Focus

When the sensory system is better regulated, children can attend, concentrate, and participate in learning far more effectively.

๐Ÿค

Greater Participation

Children who feel comfortable in their sensory world are more willing to join group activities, try new foods, engage in play, and explore new environments.

๐Ÿ˜Œ

Calmer Daily Life

Reduced sensory distress means less daily friction around clothing, food, haircuts, transitions, and other routine sensory challenges.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my child has sensory processing difficulties?
Common signs include extreme reactions to clothing or textures, covering ears at ordinary sounds, clumsiness, constant crashing or seeking intense input, and emotional dysregulation in sensory-rich environments. An OT assessment will confirm whether sensory processing is a significant factor.
Is sensory processing difficulty a diagnosis?
Sensory processing differences are recognised as a common feature of several conditions (autism, ADHD, dyspraxia) and can also occur in children without any other diagnosis. They are real, measurable, and highly responsive to targeted therapy.
What does a sensory gym session look like?
Sessions take place in our fully equipped sensory gym with swings, crash pads, balance equipment, and tactile materials. Children are guided through purposeful activities that are both therapeutic and โ€” crucially โ€” enormous fun. Most children absolutely love their sessions.
Can we do anything at home to help?
Absolutely. A 'sensory diet' โ€” a personalised programme of sensory activities spread throughout the day โ€” is a key part of our approach. We provide parents with a clear, practical home programme that significantly accelerates progress.
